arizona police to check immigration status. however, other sections of the state's controversial imfederation law were thrown out entirely. nbc's steve handelsman has more. >> reporter: both sides had something to celebrate as the high court handed down the arizona decision. by 5-3 the justices upheld the most controversial part of the law, requiring police to check the immigration status of anyone they stop and suspect is not in the u.s. legally. the court rejecting the claim that that's only the federal government's job. swing justice anthony kennedy sided with court conservatives, writing for the majority, the mandatory nature of the arizona status checks does not interfere with the federal immigration scream. confrontation between state and federal officials is an important feature of the system. that's what arizona's governor jan brewer had argued. >> this is the day we had been waiting for, and, make no

mistake, arizona is ready. civil rights will be protected, racial profiling will not be tolerated. >> reporter: but opponents of the so-called "show me your papers" provision will write on. >> i believe it's the most venomous part based on race, based on nationality, and based on racial profiling. >> reporter: and they made it clear if cops do profile or bend the laws it could be back in court. working without papers and police arresting those suspects without warnts. president obama celebrated that but played up instead of what he did on immigration. >> it's time to stop denying citizenship to responsible young people just because they're the children of undocumented workers. >> reporter: mitt romney was cautious staying in a statement the nation needs comprehensive immigration refofrmt i'm steve

handelsman, nbc news. elsewhere tropical storm debby is absolutely drenching florida's gulf coast. it's expected to continue for days causing flooding and power outages. nbc's jay gray has that story from panama city beach, florida. >> reporter: the winds have intensified but it's the rain that's defined debby to this point, a driving rain, as much as five inches an hour in some of the hardest hit areas. rivers are spilling over their banks. water has swallowed countless roadways and now threatens homes, businesses and even this >> we've been pumping for six hours and are still pumping hoping to get ahold of the storm surge. >> reporter: in some places the race with mother nature has already been lost. >> thank god it didn't happen when we were here but it's still emotional. >> reporter: emotions stretched

stories. >> i was going to say leggy. >> you could come up with better. good morn, everyone. let's talk about debby first and the amazing heat wave in the u.s. it's really an isolated air yachl it's not really encompassing a large area of florida. but yesterday around tallahassee down to the coast this little area picked up around 15 to 20 inches of rain. now we're moving that move along interstate i-10. that's by far the best chances for extreme flooding today from debby that slowly meanders here. the storm is going to inch its way through the north-northeast as we go through the next couple of days even due the west. you notice by thursday we're still watching the form over central flood. it's not until thursday to friday that the open rains will be out to the atlantic and maybe it's sneaking up to the carolinas too. hopefully it's not too extreme. you want to talk about extreme?

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." and in sports last night arizona knocked off two-time defending champion south carolina in the college baseball world series. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all of you sports headlines. >> good morning, and we will start with high drama in the college world series. arizona we go. tied at one in the ninth. brandon dixon was put into the game for his glove but came up with a huge at-bat. scored the go-ahead run. dixon with his first hit of the college world series am it was a big one. that opened the floodgates. wildcats flooded for three many the ninth. with go to the bottom of the inning. last chance for south carolina.

>> it does. and now here's an early look at this morning's headlines in entertainment. well, alex trebek's health is not in jeopardy. he's up and in good spirits at a los angeles hospital as he recovers from a mild heart attack. the 71-year-old trebek who's hosted jeopardy for 28 years is fully recovered and expected to be back to work in july. buzz reports that zack gal a fa na cass will mair longtime girlfriend. >> what's so funny? >> this next part is kind of funny. it includes a drawing of the cup i by galifianakis that makes him look like, quote, a little troll while quinn is a stunning tall blond princess. >> he's funny to look at. he's funny, period. uggy, the canine star of the oscar winning film, "the artist" became the first dog to put his paw prints in cement outside the landmark the chinese theater. there you go.
